Summary

Here are the most important features of the Schengen Insurance.

  • Limited health insurance without medical acceptance if you are staying in the Netherlands temporarily.
  • Health insurance Compleet from € 1.60 per day.
  • Cover up to € 500,000.
  • You can take out insurance immediately.
  • Your insurance meets the demands of the Schengen visa.
  • You can add liability in the Netherlands to your insurance.

Who is the insurance for?

If you are staying temporarily in the Netherlands for a family visit or a holiday, you will want to be insured for unexpected medical expenses. If you apply for a Schengen visa, health insurance is compulsory. The Schengen Insurance offers cover for unexpected medical expenses, and meets the demands of the Schengen visa.

If you already have health insurance in your home country that is also valid in the Netherlands, you may not need the Schengen Visitor Insurance. Bear in mind, however, that medical care in the Netherlands may be more expensive than in your home country. You may be confronted with high costs if you are uninsured or under insured. Ask your own healthcare insurer for further details.

Schengen visa

In some cases a visa may be necessary for a short stay in the Netherlands. This is called the Schengen visa. This visa enables you to stay 90 consecutive days in the Netherlands or other Schengen countries. Whether or not you need a visa depends on your country of origin.

You will only be granted a visa for the Netherlands if you are sufficiently insured for emergency medical help. You must have insurance that:

  • Covers the costs of repatriation (return to your country of origin) for medical reasons or for urgent medical care.
  • Has a minimum cover of €30,000.
  • Is valid for your entire stay.

OOM Schengen Visitor Insurance meets all these requirements.

What does the Schengen insurance cover?

The Schengen Visitor Insurance covers unexpected healthcare costs. For example, the cost of treating acute appendicitis or a broken leg. If you incur medical expenses for an ailment or complaint that you had before taking out Schengen Visitor Insurance, we will not reimburse these expenses.

The insurance will reimburse for example:

  • a general practitioner
  • medication
  • specialist care
  • hospitalisation
  • dental costs following an accident, up to € 350

If your medical expenses are covered by the  Schengen Visitor Insurance, you will be reimbursed up to € 500,000.

Per insured period you will have the following excess:

  • € 50 if you are younger than 70 years.
  • € 100 if you are aged between 70 and 79 years.
  • € 200 if you are aged 80 and above.

Sometimes there is a maximum amount or a maximum number of treatments covered.

You can add liability to your insurance. We will then reimburse damages caused by you to others or property in the Netherlands up to €1,250,000. You have an excess of €45 per event for items you may have borrowed.

To find out exactly what is reimbursed, see the coverage summary (pdf).

What doesn’t the insurance cover?

Schengen Visitor Insurance is not subject to medical acceptance. Before you take out insurance, we will only ask if you are expecting to be admitted to hospital.

If you incur medical expenses for an ailment or complaint that you had before taking out OOM Schengen Visitor Insurance, we will not reimburse these expenses. This also applies if you did not know you had the ailment or complaint at the time you took out the insurance.

You will not receive reimbursement for some treatments. Important exclusions are:

  • Pregnancy and birth (including maternity care).
  • Diabetes mellitus, gallstones and kidney stones.
  • Dental costs which are not the result of an accident.

For all exclusions, see the OOM Schengen Visitor Insurance policy terms and conditions (pdf).

How long is the insurance valid?

You can take out Schengen Visitor Insurance for a maximum of 6 months. If you are aged 80 or above, the insurance is only valid for a maximum of 3 months.

If your insurance has expired, you cannot extend it: you must take out new cover. Again, we will not reimburse any costs incurred for ailments or complaints you already had when you took out the insurance. You may therefore find that there is no cover for complaints or ailments in your new insurance which were covered by your old insurance.

If you don’t know how long you will need insurance, it is better to choose a longer period rather than one that may be too short.
